The event is organised by Brecon Mountain Biking, a group of local cycling enthusiasts and was the inspiration of Jason Thorne who runs Biped Cycles, Brecon. The event was held for the first time in 2002 and has been held every year since, normally on the second Sunday in September.

The event is thought to be unique amongst its kind because all profit raised from rider entry fees is donated to support local charities.

Since the first event in 2002, over £90,000 has been donated to local charities. The principal beneficiary has been the Keith Morris Memorial Fund

Keith Morris Memorial Fund

Keith Morris Memorial Fund is a registered charity based in Brecon, which was set up in 1987 with the purpose of improving the lives of people living in the Brecknockshire area who have been affected by a disability and are unable to receive any assistance from the State. Using the donations from the Beast, the Memorial Fund has assisted with the purchase of an external stairlift and three electric wheelchairs, all for local residents.

Since 2005, two charities have been nominated as the principal beneficiaries of the Beast:
Brecon Mountain Rescue
Keith Morris Memorial Fund

The organisation of the event would not be possible without the help of a whole host of local organisations and individuals who have donated their time, help and resources. Thanks also to all the riders who pay their entry fees so they can enjoy pain and discomfort.
